Services

Wexen provides comprehensive and intensive psychotherapy to adults and adolescents based in Hong Kong and Australia. Our primary focus and specialism is emotional dysregulation; we help individuals develop the skills needed to regulate their emotions.

Who Needs Help to Regulate?

Those experiencing the below may have more difficulty regulating their emotions. Studies have shown that targeting underlying psychological processes such as emotional dysregulation can alleviate these difficulties:

Anxiety Disorders

Depressive Disorders

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Trauma and Trauma Related Disorders

Alcohol Use Disorder

Eating Disorders inclusive of Food Addiction

Love addiction/Limerence

Traumatic Brain Injury

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Any individual can experience emotional dysregulation, this can be related to life-changes, environmental factors, unexpected suffering (grief) or even a predisposition to feel emotions very deeply (a highly sensitive person), you may not have been taught how to emotionally regulate as a child and/or learnt maladaptive regulation strategies from care-givers. This does not mean that there is something wrong with you, just that, you need a bit of extra help and time to build the skills needed to lead an emotionally regulated life. Strong emotions can be a tool for empowerment, not impairment.

Emotional Dysregulation

Emotional dysregulation can be extremely damaging, it can look like, angry outbursts, irritability, intense reactions that are not in line with the context of the situation, chronic negative mood, mood swings, difficulty focusing and low stress tolerance. On the other end of the emotional dysregulation spectrum, emotional numbing /blocking, suppression and repression of emotions, avoidance, difficulty experiencing positive emotions and disassociation. This way of life can be devastating for relationships, health, careers and the fulfillment of dreams, aspirations and life purpose, creating a vicious cycle of shame and more emotional dysregulation.

This does not have to be your reality. At Wexen evidence-based and emerging interventions are tailored to client’s specific emotional dysregulation difficulties to develop the skills needed to regulate in their daily lives; improving wellbeing, relationships, career progression and enabling a life aligned with individual goals, aspirations and purpose.

*Wexen believes that the development of emotional regulation should be considered a first line of defense for life’s challenges and mental health difficulties.

Approach

The unified protocol for the transdiagnostic treatment of emotional disorders is integrated with third-wave cognitive behaviour therapies and existential (meaning-making) techniques; tailored to the individual needs of each client. In practice this looks like a multi-faceted approach to target the aversive and avoidant reactions to emotions.

Strategies include learning to re-evaluate automatic cognitive appraisals (thoughts) without making them bad whilst building cognitive flexibility, altering behaviours and actions that are usually associated with dysregulation, fostering mindful emotion awareness, dealing with and understanding physical sensations and towards the end of therapy emotion exposure techniques. Setting goals, maintaining motivation, and psychological assessment will be ongoing aspects of therapy.

Transparency

At Wexen we believe that 6 sessions is the minimum time required to teach and practice the skills needed to embody and implement emotional regulation. After 20 sessions (maximum), therapy will come to an end, you are then able to practice your newfound regulation independently (therapy should not be indefinite) . Additionally, therapy is action-oriented, that is, you will be asked to practice the skills learnt in session at home. Frequent practice is where the magic happens. Please don’t be intimidated, building motivation and commitment will be an ongoing part of therapy. Just keep in mind, time, practice and work are required before booking your first session. If you have any questions book a free 15 minute consultation call.

That is, emotional regulation is the quickest and most effective way to create positive, holistic and long-lasting change for most people. Stephanie believes the development of emotional regulation skills and strategies should be the first line of defense and treatment for those at risk of and/or who are experiencing mental health difficulties.

*Stephanie utilises the Unified Protocol for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders, Third Wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapies and existential techniques throughout treatment. Her approach is inherently integrative and will be tailored to each individual, their life experiences and what they are currently facing.
